The Great Maestro
The Great Maestro

I heard a story of a young boy who wanted to learn how to play the piano. His mother decided to treat him, and she booked tickets to a concert, where a world-famous concert pianist would be playing.
The evening of the concert arrived, and the mother and son took their seats, watching as the hall slowly filled with people. His mother began to chat to some others when suddenly, she realised that her young son was no longer sitting in the seat next to her.
Looking around, she saw a small figure walk confidently down the steps, onto the stage, and over to the grand piano, which took pride of place on the stage, under a huge spotlight.
“Come back!” she whispered loudly, but the little boy had by now clambered onto the piano stool. He began to play Chop Sticks. A gradual hush fell over the audience. The orchestra looked a bit confused.
Suddenly, the figure of the maestro himself appeared by the side of the stage, and there was an audible gasp from the audience as they watched the scene unfold.
Striding across the stage, the maestro sat on the piano stool, next to the boy. He began to play with his left hand, and then reaching his right arm around the boy, began to use both hands to play alongside the boy. The orchestra joined in, and the sound of the most beautiful music filled the concert hall, with the little tune of chopsticks at the very center. Every now and then, the maestro would lean closer to the boy, and whisper in his ear “Keep going. You’re doing really well”.
I love this story. It reminds me of how, no matter how clumsy our efforts feel to us, God is so delighted when we step out in faith and of His “incomparably great power” which is working in us.
“For we are God’s masterpiece” Paul reminds us in Ephesians 2:10, “He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago”.
In the next part of the letter Paul intercedes for the Ephesians “I pray to the Father, the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth. I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources, he will empower you with inner strength through His spirit.”
Glorious, unlimited resources.
Let’s remember that. We are His masterpiece. His glorious and unlimited resources and empower us with inner strength. And like the great Maestro, He leans closer and whispers “Keep going, you’re doing really well”.
